ABOUT ME My name is Michael Smith, I am 25 years old and grew up with speedboat racing in my blood. Our family is the first, 3rd generation racers in South Australia. It started with my Grandpa Clarrie and my Great Uncle Don.P.Farrell, racing the first Alcatraz and Impulse.
My Dad, Terry Smith has been racing for 35 years. He started racing his first Hydroplane Alcatraz in the 1970's and raced various hydroplanes untill 2004. He now runs a 6 Litre Carby Displacement also called Alcatraz, and last year was Austrlian 6 Litre Carby Champion. My Uncle Rick also raced Hydroplanes for many years. My older brother Matthew currently races a 6 litre Displacement, and my younger brother James was a 3 year J1 Australian Champion.
I started racing J1's in 1994/95 season when i was 8 years old. I won rookie of the year, and in 1996 Won the J1 Australian Championships. With my younger brother James, dad took us to compete at all the interstate titles, and at all the race meetings we could, untill i was too big to old for this class.
I then bought a 25Hp in 2002, and after a few seasons racing it, I sold it to by a 1.6 Litre Hydroplane. When dad bought his new displacement I decided to sell my 1.6, and we are working on having the old 4.2 Litre Hydroplane Alcatraz on the water very soon.
Having grown up around the sport, there is nothing I would rather do than be involved in such a great motorsport, by either racing, filming, or crewing for dad and the Agent Orange Team.
I take my video camera everywhere and try to promote the sport by producing my DVD's
See you at the races!!! Cheers Mike Smith
